“New Mural”
See Banner Image Above
As part of our Master Plan Update in 2018, the community made it clear that public art was a need and desire for the area. Through a grants from our partners, we were able to come complete several murals in our area. Not only do these pieces beautify the space, but they allow for our community members to see themselves in an artistic representation.
“Inspired Union”
A Special Reflection from the Artist “Mr. Soul”
“The name for this piece didn’t come until I was close to finishing. Initially it was simply an image to depict a young black boy in a positive light, smiling about life in light of his environment. As the piece progressed, I began to realize that the barbershop that once lived at that location was a source of inspiration to the community. Men, women and children, young and old stopped to share their testimony about their experience when the shop was open. It prompted me to focus on the young black boy’s energy and smile as a source of inspiration to all who experience the mural. And that the final intent was to “Inspire Union” (with Union being printed across his t-shirt).”
“Revolutionary Prayers”
Location – at 3560 East 93rd Street
This mural is based on a quote from Andre 3000 where he states in a song, “…and only prayer, is the tightest game that you can have.” “Revolutionary” can be defined as a radical change in something. The young black girl is praying for a radical frequency shift towards unity and peace as a necessary component to the community’s survival and progress.
“Inez Killingsworth”
Location – 93rd and Miles Ave
Inez Killingsworth was selected by UMDC as the subject for this mural based on her unprecedented work and activism to empower and strengthen Ohio’s people. The location seemed perfect as it is a gateway to our community and it’s almost as if Inez is looking over the Inez Killingsworth Pointe, a Permanent Supportive Housing complex on the northeast corner of Miles Avenue and East 131st Street.
